In the 1930s Cabot Yerxa introduced L.W. Coffee, a developer, to the region’s hot mineral springs. Recognizing their potential, Coffee built a bathhouse in 1941, laying the foundation for what would become the city’s spa culture.
Desert Hot Springs flourished during the mid-20th century, earning the title of “Spa Capital of the World” with over 100 spas in operation. The warm mineral waters became a draw for health seekers and leisure travelers alike.
The therapeutic mineral waters of Desert Hot Springs also attracted Dr. Robert Bingham, who saw their potential for healing during the polio epidemic of the 1940s. He established Angel View Crippled Children’s Hospital, which initially treated children with polio. Angel View has expanded its mission, offering comprehensive programs for individuals with disabilities.
