Girl Scouts, Ophelia, DHS Recreation Center and Rotary Interact

DHS residents have always put time and energy on ways to engage and nurture the youth of the city. These are some of the programs that have continued and grown in our town, raising up solid citizens who make a positive difference in the world! By getting involved with them, we can all participate. This is a follow-up to Women’s History Month (March)…

Cynthia Breunig, President and CEO of the Girl Scouts of San Gorgonio Council will share about the beginnings of the Girl Scouts in 1912 as well as what is happening for our girls today. She will be joined by Sharon Flannagan, who led a troop from Angel View in the 1970’s.

Another program active in DHS is the Ophelia project, sponsored by the JFK Foundation, which began in 2002 as a mentoring program for at-risk but capable Junior High and High School girls. Because the sessions emphasize life planning goals, education, and personal development, Seniors who graduate from Ophelia have an average GPA of 3.92, and many receive scholarships. Candess Tarrant, lead mentor, and several of the 5 DHS Mentors will share their experiences.

Christina Felipe, Director of the DHS Recreation Center, will speak about how intentionally the Center’s female staff members provide role models in the areas of Art, Science, Health, and Sports through their various programs. Relationships formed with the children who attend often guide these students into professional arenas.

And finally, a representative from Rotary Interact will also be part of the discussion.
